Liberty enlightening the world (Liberty Enlightening the World), better known as the Statue of Liberty (Statue of Liberty), is one of the most famous monuments of the United States. It is located in New York, on the island of Liberty Island south of Manhattan at the mouth of the Hudson River and nearby Ellis Island. It was a gift from France, a sign of friendship between the two nations, to celebrate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. The statue was unveiled October 28, 1886 in the presence of President of the United States, Grover Cleveland.
