about
B
lackbeard was probably born in Bristol, England,
in
1680. His real name is a mystery but it was
probably Edward Teach. He was tall and strong.
He had long dark hair, scary eyes and a long dark beard.
5 He always wore a black hat called a tricorn. The legend
says that when he attacked enemy ships, he set fire to
his beard to terrify his enemies!
Before becoming a pirate, Blackbeard was a British
privateer (he fought against French ships for the British
10 monarch). Then he joined the crew of a pirate ship in 1716
to make a fortune. He soon became a captain and captured
a French ship. He named it Queen Anne's Revenge, after the
Queen of England. His flag was famous
it was black with
a white skeleton on it. The skeleton had an hourglass in one
15 hand and an arrow piercing a heart in the other hand.
BOO
CRASH!
Blackbeard and his crew captured over
40 ships in the Caribbean, between
Florida and Venezuela, and stole their
treasure (food, rum, gold, silver,
20 spices, tobacco, sugar, cotton, etc.).
People say they buried it along the
coast of South Carolina. Blackbeard's
last battle was on November 22, 1718:
British soldiers shot him five times
25 with their guns and cut off his head.
