Pilgrims and adventurers from Europe crossed the Atlantic Ocean
to start a new life in the New World
In 1607, 104 Englishmen landed at Cape Henry, Virginia, and founded
the town of Jamestown In September 1620, around 100 pilgrims
set sail from England for the New World.
The pilgrims on the Mayflower
To escape the rule of the king and his church, around 100 men,
women and children left their homeland, with their dream
of religious freedom. They salled on a ship, the Mayflower-
on a pilgrimage to the New World.
These brave travelers-the pilgrims-landed in Plymouth
after their long journey. It was December 11, 1620.
The cold winter had set in. The land was strange to
them, and nothing seemed familiar.
