THANKSGIVING
AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR HOLIDAY!!
On the fourth Thursday of November, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving - as
they have for nearly 400 years.
Thanksgiving Thursday, the fourth Thursday in November, and Friday the next day, are holidays in the USA. They commemorate the first
harvest of the Puritan colonists, who had arrived in America in 1620.
A POPULAR HOLIDAY
After nearly 400 years, Thanksgiving is still important to Americans everywhere. The Puritan colonists who started America's first
Thanksgiving celebration were some of the first immigrants from Europe. So, the holiday represents thanks for a new start in a new nation
and thanks for the year's harvest.
Americans love Thanksgiving because it is a family celebration, and less commercial than other holidays like Christmas. It is a holiday that
all Americans can celebrate, whatever their origins or religion. It really is a national celebration. Americans try to see their families for the
traditional Thanksgiving dinner. That's why, it is the busiest weekend of the year on the roads and at airports.
THE TURKEYS
A typical menu is turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie.
Turkeys originally came from north America. They were an important source of food for the colonists, who soon domesticated them.
Today, more than 250 million turkeys are raised in the USA every year. So many are eaten on Thanksgiving Day that is often called Turkey
Day!

Thanksgiving Friday is also the start of the Christmas shopping season. It is called Black Friday because it is the busiest day of the year in
shopping centres. Lots of families go there to start looking for presents.
THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
Thanksgiving is one of the most important sporting days in the USA -millions of Americans watch the American football games at Dallas
and Detroit. There are Thanksgiving parades in many cities, the most famous one being in New York. For many Americans, nearly 400
years after the first celebration, Thanksgiving is their favourite holiday.
