THIS DOCUMENT is a painting BY the American artist Edward Hopper.
IT’S CALLED Gas and it WAS PAINTED in 1940. THE SCENE TAKES
PLACE at a gas station. On the left, WE CAN SEE a road, but there are no
cars. IN THE MIDDLE ON THE RIGHT, we can see a house. IN THE
FOREGROUND, we can see a man standing near a gas pump. He MUST
BE the owner of the gas station. IN THE BACKGROUND, we can see
trees. OUR ATTENTION IS DRAWN to the man in the middle. He’s alone.
Yet, IT SEEMS as if he were serving gas to some ghost car. In fact, Hopper
INTENDS TO create an uncanny atmosphere thanks to the presence of
shadows and the absence of cars.
