The Aborigines are made up of several hundred tribes scattered over Australian territory. Each tribe has its own language, traditions and legends. Aborigines from two different tribes may therefore be unable to understand each other. This tribal organization reveals an important sense of community. It is not uncommon to see members of a tribe gather in a city park to eat or exchange, all generations combined.
Before colonization, the Aborigines moved within large territories. They lived by hunting, gathering and fishing in small groups. The frequency of their movements varied from region to region depending on water and food resources. Today, there would be around 650,000 – 700,000 indigenous people in Australia, or less than 3% of the population. It is this scattering and this diversity that put the aborigines at risk of disappearing in the modern world. As the saying goes, we are always stronger together than divided
