Languages
The official language of California is English; it is the language of government and education. According to 2000 census data, 60.5% of people in California who are at least 5 years old speak English at home and 25.8% speak Spanish. Chinese is the third most spoken language in the state with 2.6% of speakers, followed by Tagalog (2%) and Vietnamese (1.3%). French is spoken by 135,067 people, or 0.43% of the population.
