Mary Maloney, wife of a police officer and six months pregnant, murders her husband with a frozen leg after he confides in her mysteriously (in the short story, we guess he is going to leave her; in the version filmed by Hitchcock, he specifies that it is for another woman). She cooks her leg, gets pretty, and goes to buy vegetables and dessert from the local grocer to make an alibi. She then develops a scenario so as not to be arrested by the police for the crime she has just committed: when she returns home and calls her husband, she "discovers" her body before calling the woman. police and simulate grief.
