Sagot :
Pocahontas was the daughter of Powhatan, the powerful chief of some thirty tribes of Algonquin Indians in the Tidewater area of Virginia. She was born around 1595 to one of Powhatan's many wives. Her parents called her "Amonte", her clan name was Matoaka, although she was better known as Pocahontas, which means "Little Wanton", playful, mischievous little girl.
Pocahontas probably saw the white men for the first time in May 1607 when the English landed at Jamestown. The one she found most amiable was Captain John Smith. The first meeting of Pocahontas and John Smith is a legendary, romantic story (if not entirely invented by Smith). On December 29, 1607 he was leading a hunting and reconnaissance party when he was taken prisoner by Opechancanough, Powhatan's brother. Several days later he was brought to Powhatan's official residence in Werowocomoco, which was 12 miles from Jamestown. According to Smith, he was initially well received by the great chef who offered a party. Then he was grabbed and forcibly laid on two large flat stones. The Indians stood over him with sticks ready to beat him to death. Suddenly a little Indian girl came hurriedly took "Smith's head in her arms, stretched out on his body to save him from death…".
