On June 17th, we were able to witness a fierce and exceptional fight at the Roland Garros 1989. Ivan
Lendl the Czechoslovakian against the Asian American, Michael Chang. These two players didn't expect
to embark on a fight that will last 5 sets (4/6 - 4/6 - 6/3 - 6/3 - 6/3). Lots of twists and turns during
this meeting, a lot of doubts, hope and cramps ...
Michael Chang, a young 17-year-old player, was not intimidated by the world number 1 in this round
of 16. It was with determination that he fought to advance to the quarter-final against world number
3 Stefan Edberg. After losing the first 2 sets, Michael Chang resolved to lose the match first, then after
one game, two games, a break, a set victory was possible and the ball was in his court. It was then that
he went back to 2 sets everywhere. The fifth set was certainly the hardest, the cramps began to
appear for the
young Asian. Although his opponent was quick to revisit the court, Michael was willing
to run 15 times
more than Ivan to wina point, even if every movement caused a cramp. Everything had
to be tried to win this match, from a passing shot backhand at the end of the race to an exceptional
spoon serve that left everyone in shock, even the most devious shots were a way to win. It was a truly
amazing game and it will be forever etched in the memory of spectators and viewers who kept
applauding for all of these incredible points. Well done to Michael for his performance, he is an image
of fighting spirit and exemplary mentality​
