When I dreamed of my world tour, the United States was not on the program. Of course, I wanted to explore the country, but it wasn't necessarily in my budget, or in my immediate list. However, when I found a good plan to go to Colombia via Iceland and the United States, I decided to extend my trip a bit and explore the east coast of the country. A few years later, I knew the country a little better, I liked it, but I was also looking forward to leaving for more exoticism and facilities. It must be said that being a backpacker in this country is not necessarily obvious. Without the budget, without the rental car and with limited time, I was somewhat limited. But, I got a better idea of the country, what I like and dislike and how I would like to travel there next time. Cape Cod and Provincetown was a corner that I absolutely wanted to visit and that I imagined spectacular. I was not disappointed and Provincetown met all of my expectations. A small, peaceful and original village, beautiful wild beaches and a very pleasant lifestyle. After this little overview, I know that the northeast region of the United States would please me a lot and I already imagine a trip centered on this region to discover the parks and beaches of Maine and Massachusetts and the cities and the history of the surrounding states. On the accommodation side, despite what we think, there are quite a decent number of hostels in the country. In big cities, they are quite expensive and if you have a car, it is quite possible that a motel is more accommodating for your budget. However, youth hostels (including the Hostelling International network) are modern, well-equipped and organize many events to bring travelers together and show them around the city. I will miss it. Couchsurfing works, but can be quite complicated without a car outside the cities where the public transportation network is very developed. When I managed to find a good plan for $ 10 crossing from North to South by bus with several stops , I did not hesitate. So I was able to go from Boston to Orlando for $ 10, stopping in many big cities along the way. Budget level, we can not do better. Unfortunately, the bus passes by motorways and there are no interesting landscapes at all. Do not hesitate to do research with the different bus companies, especially on the east coast: you may be able to find good deals, including Greyhound, Peter Pan, Bolt or Megabus (the company I used) . For the best rates, you must book in advance. I also rented a car for four days. The prices are quite economical, especially if there are several of you and the gas costs absolutely nothing. Please note that this will be cheaper if the driver is over 25 years old and if you bring the car back to the place where you picked it up. Also be careful to have enough funds to pay the deposit during the rental. Driving and parking in the United States is very easy, and it is definitely the best way to tour the country and be flexible. My next trip will definitely be a road trip to the United States ... When you think of the United States, there are many clichés in mind, we know them all. It is obvious that they have a base and that we meet Americans who are real traveling stereotypes. However, in the big cities of the north of the east coast, the population has nothing to do with what we imagine and I have also met throughout the country adorable, open, very friendly and very critics of their country. Southern hospitality is a completely true cliché and so much the better. From Charlotte, you will feel a big change. Politeness, discussions in the street, incredible welcome ... The South is a truly magical place for that. But yes, I have had heated discussions with some people and we will never get along. Politically speaking, the difference with Europeans is very strong. Proud capitalism, selfishness and a culture of work and personal success are at the rendezvous. Poverty is very present and the number of homeless people is impressive in all the cities I have crossed. I feel like it has gotten a lot worse than the last time I was in the country in 2009. It is completely subjective, but it is quite difficult for me to understand how the country works and even more after my extended trip. In full shutdown, with the strong presence of religion in the South, the very conservative aspect, the firearms, the death penalty, the negativism in front of Obamacare, one sometimes has the impression that the country is walking on its head . I was delighted to meet a few Americans who shared my opinion. A country and a culture that turns out to be very different
