Born in Atlanta on January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King, after studying theology, became a pastor at a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. At that time, segregation between whites and blacks was still widespread in the United States.
On the strength of this victory, he decided to extend his non-violent struggle for black civil rights to the whole country. Participating in non-violent actions, he was imprisoned several times. He was received by President Kennedy and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
While preparing a new march against poverty, he was assassinated on the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis on April 4, 1968.
A nonviolent black civil rights activist, Martin Luther King played a major role in the emancipation of African Americans and in raising awareness of the injustice of segregation in the United States.
