< You are the black girl spoke to Kathy Williams in the restaurant. Write you version of the scene and more generally write about growing up in a segregated state.

Bonjour,

When I was a child I remember that day. I will never forget that day…I was studying in a « business school » in Birmingham. With some friends students, we went to have lunch. On our way I realized that people were looking at us. You know, I was used to those racists behaviors. I was strong enough to even ignore their insults. « Nigger » was a word anyone could read on some walls of the city.

But that day, I felt something different. People weren’t looking at me. They were staring at Kathy Williams, my friend. I was so embarrassed for her that I asked her if she really wanted to have lunch with us because I didn’t want her to be in trouble. We were friends but our skin color was such a big deal for people at that time.

I don’t know if it’s friendship, strength, or courage that led her reaction but, despite the disgust, she inspired to the white people who were judging her, she stayed by our side. This period was awful but I am proud to have met such a woman as Kathy.
