I think we should all be feminists. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian author committed to the fight against racism and sexism. She has written the book Dear Ijeawele, or a manifesto for a feminist education in which she responds to a friend who has just given birth to a little girl and asks her for enlightened advice to give her a feminist education. There she makes 15 suggestions to her friend to avoid the pitfalls that sexism sets for girls from birth.
In this Ted lecture, she explains why everyone should be a feminist. She sheds light on why she feels more alone in her struggle for gender equality than in her fight against racism. Feminism aims to free women and men from the roles assigned to them by gender stereotypes.
She makes many references to Nigerian society (being herself from Nigeria) but many of these examples are applicable to our Western societies. She says, for example, that our societies have turned pretexts into art form. It reminds me of a phrase I was reading recently on the internet that basically said: If you raised strong women with good self-esteem and good mental health, then the global economy would collapse in 24 hours.
