Bonsoir,

Last year he went down in history when he became the first of the “Stolen Generations” to receive compensation. Bruce was among the 100,000 Aboriginal children who were victims of the ethnic assimilation programme, led by white Australian 5governments from the early 20th century to the 1970s.
When he was 13 months old, Bruce was admitted to hospital, suffering from gastroenteritis. Soon after, he was given to a white family because the hospital had wrongly recorded he was an orphan and that he was not correctly looked after.
His mother wrote to the authorities to get some news, but she was told he was still in hospital and they didn’t let her see Bruce until he was ten.
Bruce ‘s childhood was far from happy. He was the only black child, growing up among white children. So he not only felt different from his foster parents and fellow pupils, he also suffered from bullying at school.
So traumatic was his childhood and adolescence, that in 1998 he launched a legal action against the Australian government. He claimed that the fact that he had been “stolen” had ruined his life and was responsible for his difficulties, namely depression and unemployment. He also claimed he had lost his cultural identity.
He finally got A$525,000 in compensation.

Répondez aux questions suivantes:

Who is this man? Why was he given compensation? What had happened to him before?

Merci d'avance.

Réponse:

1) This man is Bruce, an Aboriginal man.

2) He was given compensation due to his traumatic childhood and adolescence - he was an only black child surrounded by white children.

3)After being admitted in the hospital due to his illness, he was given to a white family as it was found out he wasn't really an orphan. Following this, he suffered racism and bullying as he was black in the midst of white folks.
