He finds there all kinds of documents coming from two noble families of the region, the Bazeille and the Soleuvre, massacred and stripped at the time. Only their last descendant, Hector, could be saved. The trouble is that he is in prison awaiting execution. We sent him everything he needed to get away, but he refused, because he is sure that the one he loves, the beautiful Honorine de Blamont, prefers him the suitor chosen by his father, a bourgeois enriched thanks to the Revolution…
- Released in 1857, in the form of a serial, "Les errants de la nuit" is a popular novel well in the style of the time. That is to say very well written, very pleasant to read and full of twists and turns. The intrigue is very well conducted even if certain situations are more than classic in the literature: the annoyed lovers, the legitimate heir robbed by greedy crooks or the treasure hidden in an underground passage. Poor Hector will be helped by a bunch of good people all from the common people, but remained loyal to the aristocracy to the extent that it knew how to render service to the people instead of serving itself on its back. We are very far from current trends. With Féval, the good guys always end up winning and the bad guys are punished. Eternal values are respected. Even if this work is not the most flamboyant of the production of the prolific author who made equal play with Balzac and Dumas in his time; it’s a real pleasure to read, if only to enjoy a breath of fresh, invigorating air.
