Bonjour,
Dear ( Mr./Mrs./Ms + name of your teacher)
We visited Big Ben today !
We walked in Westminster area and met tourists and policemen. We saw double-decker buses and statues and finally arrived in front of the House of Parliament and the mostpopular monumentin London: Big Ben. It was so exciting !
Then, we went inside. We discovered that there was a prison room in Big Ben : it was scary !! The last prisoner was Charles Bradlow, a MP, who refused to take an oath on the Bible.
After, we entered the room to see insideof the clock. We learned that there were four faces and that someone had to light the gas lamps all night long to illuminate the clock. Now, they use light bulbs and electricity ! It was a really big place !
We left to see the Great Clock: it was so quiet ! We understood that for the clock to be on time, the pendulum had to be calibrated. So, someone removed pennies to slow down the pendulum and added pennies to speed it up. It was really surprising to learn that !
We climbed 334 steps and finally reached the Belfry which the most impressive part of Big Ben !! We found out that Big Ben refers to the biggest bell ! It weighs 3 tons and a half which is the size of an elephant !! We realized that Big Ben chimes 56 times a day : this is really impressive.
Best Regards
