Yes, the United States can be classified as a nation of immigrants. In 1492, explorer Christopher Columbus discovered America but returned to Europe to live the rest of his life. It is not until 1607 that the first immigrants to America arrived from England with the specific intent to settle in America. Jamestown in Virginia, was the first colony formed by immigrants. Over the years, immigrants came to America from many nations around the world in pursuit of better life opportunities.

The first person to have landed on what is present day “ United States” is Juan Ponce De Leon of Spain who arrived in Florida in 1513. America is today, the 3rd largest country in the world with a population of more than 370 million people. 95% of the US population can trace their origins or ancestry to a country outside of the United States. The remaining 5% are made of Native Americans whose ancestors were occupants of the American land before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
